In 2003 Henry Chesbrough published “Open Innovation – The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology”. Celebrating its 10th edition and 20 years since the inception of the Open Innovation concept, the World Open Innovation Conference (WOIC) continues to unite stakeholders from academia, industry, and policy, fostering discourse on open innovation.Â
This year’s theme, “Bringing Together Stakeholders for Joint Value Creation” explores the synergy of diverse stakeholders in enhancing value. We invite academic insights, real-life examples, and discussions on Joint Value Creation. Join us as we delve into the question, “Is it true that we innovate better if we do it together?” in this landmark conference.

At WOIC 2023, we bring together research and academia! Do you have a best practice that you would like to share with other practitioners or researchers to validate your approach or to get feedback? Apply for our best practice sessions and stand a chance to win the Best OI Practice Awards. There will be three awards: one winner and two finalists.Â
Below are some of the speakers from previous WOICs.Â
Ann Majchrzak is the USC Associates’ Chaired Professor of Business Administration for Marshall. She teaches and does research on digital innovation. She is a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems. She has held concurrent appointments at Esade Business School, Ramon Llull University (Barcelona, Spain) Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, LUISS School of Business and Management (Rome, Italy) and Simon Fraser University (Vancouver Canada) in the areas of Innovation and Organization. She has a 2020 book: Unleashing the Crowd: Collaborative Solutions for Wicked Business and Societal Problems, a Marshall webinar for Covid19 & Small Businesses, and a Tommy Talk on the subject.
Henry Chesbrough is widely known as the “father of open innovation”. After having published a book with that title in 2003, the notion of “open innovation” has become adopted across the globe to describe a new paradigm for innovation. This is also very true for the Brainport region where his ideas have had a big impact on the development of the local ecosystem. More generally, his vision to bridge theory and practice is visible in a lot of his work, and it is one of the purposes of the WOIC of which he is the founder.
Robert-Jan Smits is President of the Executive Board. As President he believes that universities must seek a stronger connection with and relevance to society and its challenges. Educating young talents and carrying out excellent research is essential. The TU/e is embedded in a strong high-tech region. Together and in full partnership, university and industry in this innovation ecosystem are realizing the unimaginable.
Dr. Salima Douven is the Head of Open Innovation and Incubation at Henkel dx. She is shaping the future through digitalization and is a champion for female leaders and start-up founders.
WOIC 2022 pre-conference visit will take place on November 14th in the heart of the Brainport region, which is a regional innovation ecosystem in the Eindhoven area. It is a renowned hotspot for open innovation. The conference itself will take place at the High Tech Campus, which has been recognized as the smartest square kilometer in the world. The campus is built around an ecosystem of 235 companies with a range of application fields. It is home to over 12.000 innovators, researchers, and engineers that create the technologies and businesses of the future. Together with the High Tech Campus and Brainport Development — an organization that provides local support in the region to attract international high-tech and manufacturing companies —, we will be developing a pre-conference visit to expose interested attendees to the local ecosystem
The discounted student rate applies to students enrolled in a college/university program (e.g., as PhD student). Registration with a valid college/university email address is required.
The regular rate applies to all participants (except students) regardless of their affiliation (e.g., academia, industry, policy, government, NGO).
The online-only rate applies to the online track, including a live stream/recording of the plenary sessions (e.g., keynotes), online paper presentations/discussions, and other selected sessions. Those who wish to participate in the “online-only” virtual conference will need to indicate this during the submission.Â
