In 2003 Henry Chesbrough published “Open Innovation – The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology”. Celebrating its 10th edition and 20 years since the inception of the Open Innovation concept, the World Open Innovation Conference (WOIC) continues to unite stakeholders from academia, industry, and policy, fostering discourse on open innovation.
This year’s theme, “Bringing Together Stakeholders for Joint Value Creation” explores the synergy of diverse stakeholders in enhancing value. We invite academic insights, real-life examples, and discussions on Joint Value Creation. Henry Chesbrough is widely known as the “father of Open Innovation.” After publishing a book with that title in 2003, the concept of “open innovation” has been adopted globally to describe a new paradigm for innovation. This is particularly true for the Biscay region, where his ideas have significantly impacted the development of the local ecosystem. More broadly, his vision of bridging theory and practice is evident in much of his work, and serves as one of the foundational goals of WOIC, which he founded in 2014.
Dr. Markus Nordberg is the Head of Resources Development of the Development and Innovation Unit (IPT-DI) at CERN, Switzerland. In addition to coordinating multi-disciplinary innovation projects at IdeaSquare at CERN, he also coordinates the EC-funded 20 M€ sensor and imaging R&D&I initiative called ATTRACT aiming at both scientific and societal impact of disruptive co-innovation. Prior to this function, he served 12 years as the Resources Coordinator of the ATLAS project at CERN. He has also served as Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Centrum voor Bedrijfseconomie, Faculty ESP-Solvay Business School, University of Brussels, and as a member of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society and the Association of Finnish Parliament Members and Scientists, TUTKAS. He has a degree both in Physics and in Business Administration.
Linus Dahlander is professor at ESMT Berlin, specializing in innovation, digitalization, and networks. With an illustrious career that began at Chalmers University and included a postdoc at Stanford, he’s made a significant academic and practical impact. He consults for major companies like BMW, Siemens, and Lufthansa, and has been honored as a top 40 Under 40 Professor by Poets & Quants. His research, published in premier academic journals, explores how innovations unfold within networks. Dahlander currently serves as an Associate Editor for Strategic Management Journal.

Enthusiastic executive with more than 20 years of experience in the energy sector focused on tangible results. She currently devotes her interest and commitment as Chief Technology & Innovation Officer at Redeia (former Grupo Red Electrica), the Spanish Electricity transportation & operation system company, focusing on value creation by adopting new technologies and innovative models, accelerating and benefiting digitalisation and energy transition, sustainability and efficiency. She oversees ELEWIT, the technology platform of Redeia that focuses on scanning and leveraging current and future innovation and trends aligned with the company’s long-term objectives by nurturing and scaling a broad portfolio of new
cutting-edge and state-of-the-art companies. Likewise, she is a member of the Board of Directors of HISPASAT, the Spanish satellite communications operator, and leader in the distribution of content in Spanish and Portuguese; also, she is a member of Redeia’s Executive Committee, Purchasing Committee and Sustainability Committee.

Jokin is responsible for keeping CAF Group at the forefront of sustainable mobility solutions. He initiates new business opportunities and collaborates with top startups to bring innovations to the company. Jokin launched the CAF Startup Station and held various responsibilities within the CAF Group, including Deputy General Manager at CAF Power & Automation and General Manager at Traintic. Jokin holds a degree in Industrial Engineering, a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Sciences, and an MBA. Jokin has been a lecturer at the Corporate Leadership Programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Deusto Business School) and he is also a member of various boards of directors.
Roberto holds an MSc in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Pública de Navarra and a Master’s Degree in the Energy Business from Club Español de la Energía. He has also completed the Energizing Leadership Program by ESADE and other Finance and Venture Capital programs at IE Business School. Roberto began his career as innovation management consultant and joined Iberdrola´s innovation team in 2007. Since 2016, he has served as Head of Innovation at Iberdrola España. He leads Iberdrola’s Next Generation EU Office, which promotes projects for green and digital transformation in Spain, and collaborates with Iberdrola´s partners, suppliers, universities and startups.
WOIC 2022 pre-conference visit will take place on November 14th in the heart of the Brainport region, which is a regional innovation ecosystem in the Eindhoven area. It is a renowned hotspot for open innovation. The conference itself will take place at the High Tech Campus, which has been recognized as the smartest square kilometer in the world. The campus is built around an ecosystem of 235 companies with a range of application fields. It is home to over 12.000 innovators, researchers, and engineers that create the technologies and businesses of the future. Together with the High Tech Campus and Brainport Development — an organization that provides local support in the region to attract international high-tech and manufacturing companies —, we will be developing a pre-conference visit to expose interested attendees to the local ecosystem
The discounted student rate applies to students enrolled in a college/university program (e.g., as PhD student). Registration with a valid college/university email address is required.
The regular rate applies to all participants (except students) regardless of their affiliation (e.g., academia, industry, policy, government, NGO).
The online-only rate applies to the online track, including a live stream/recording of the plenary sessions (e.g., keynotes), online paper presentations/discussions, and other selected sessions. Those who wish to participate in the “online-only” virtual conference will need to indicate this during the submission.
